Russia ballistic missile and drone onslaught kills at least 10 in Ukraine
· New York PostA Russian ballistic missile and drone attack killed at least 10 people in Ukraine and injured over 80 others Saturday in a relentless overnight bombardment.
Russia launched 12 missiles — six of which were ballistic missiles — and 121 drones across Ukraine in a relentless attack, the Ukrainian Airforce said.
Among those killed was a 67-year-old man whose body was pulled out of the rubble of his home in the Donetsk region.
Russia pounded the area with three FAB-250 guided aerial bombs that targeted the city of Sloviansk, which caused damage to at least 15 private residences, killing the man and injuring at least three others, The Kyiv Post reported.
Apartment buildings, private homes, government facilities and vehicles were all damaged in the onslaught.
Ukrainian officials released pictures of a passenger bus and a car completely destroyed by the attacks, officials urged citizens to remain in shelters fearing Russian “double tap” strikes.
Russia hit Ukraine’s capital Kyiv with ballistic missiles, injuring 11 people — including an 11-year-old boy, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Ukrainian air defense was able to shoot down two guided missiles and 111 drones, the outlet reported.
President Trump promised the beleaguered Eastern European country a license to produce Patriot interceptor missiles at a July 8 NATO Summit meeting.
Patriot missiles have been running critically low in the country and Ukraine has been unable to intercept Russian missiles aimed at its capital in recent days.
The move is a monumental shift in US policy since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Until Trump’s announcement, the US was only providing Kyiv with the interceptors but did not allow Ukraine to manufacture them on their own soil.
President Biden repeatedly rejected Ukraine’s requests to be granted a license — even as the US stockpiles ran low.
Trump claimed that his personal relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also done a 180-degree turn in recent days.
The pair had a disastrous oval office meeting in February 2025, along with Vice President JD Vance, that erupted in a shouting match between the three leaders.
Trump scolded Zelensky at the time that he “didn’t have the cards,” but at the NATO summit the president remarked on how relations have improved:
“We’ve actually developed a good relationship! Hard to believe, right? From the Oval Office to now.”
Meanwhile, Zelensky and at least 25 world leaders will meet in Paris on Monday for a Coalition of the Willing summit aimed at renewing the ceasefire push and finalizing security guarantees. NATO chief Mark Rutte and the US representative are expected to attend.
