Tottenham Hotspur avoid Premier League relegation as West Ham suffer devastating drop
· New York PostTottenham Hotspur can exhale.
The Premier League’s relegation race wrapped up on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur beat Everton with a nervy 1-0 win at home to stay in England’s top flight – and send West Ham down in the process.
The Hammers, who entered the day two points behind Spurs, had to win and hope for their rivals to lose to stay in the Premier League, with Tottenham’s goal difference far exceeding theirs.
West Ham at least did their part, beating Leeds United 3-0 at home on the final day of the season, but Joao Palhinha’s first half rebound for Tottenham was enough against an Everton side with nothing to play for.
West Ham ultimately finished in 18th with 39 points on the season, with Burnley and Wolves – who were mathematically relegated weeks ago – in 19th and 20th place respectively with 22 and 20 points apiece.
For Spurs, it was a second straight season hovering around the relegation places after finishing 17th last year as well.
However, the club will be breathing a massive sigh of relief after cycling through three different managers this season.
The last one, Roberto De Zerbi, won three of his seven league games in charge, ultimately shepherded the club to safety, and will hope to get Spurs back into the European places next season.
West Ham’s relegation is the club’s third since the turn of the century, as they were also sent down to the Championship in 2003 and 2011.
The club actually lifted European silverware as recently as 2023, when they won the Europa Conference League over Fiorentina, but poor spending and mismanagement since then have landed them in this unfortunate position.
