Police started Sherrone Moore investigation before he was publicly fired as Michigan coach

Police outside Ann Arbor, Michigan, began their investigation of University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore before it was publicly announced he had been fired by the school, a timeline of Wednesday’s shocking meltdown reveals.

Cops in Pittsfield Township confirmed Wednesday that they were investigating an alleged assault, but didn’t explicitly say Moore was involved.

The Pittsfield Township Police Department said its assault investigation began around 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday in a news release that was light on specifics.

At 4:43 p.m., Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel announced Moore — who led the Wolverines for two seasons — had been fired due to what he called “credible evidence” of an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” who has not been publicly identified.

Moore wasn’t booked into the Washtenaw County Jail for four more hours, around 8:30 p.m., according to authorities.

Cops said that “a suspect in this case was taken into custody,” and that “the incident does not appear to be random in nature.”

No charges have been filed as of noon Thursday, but police said more details regarding the incident would be forthcoming when available.

In a statement circulating in several published reports, Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said, “The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law enforcement, and as a result, we do not expect charging decisions or an arraignment today,” and confirmed he remained in custody.

Moore, 39, who has been married since 2015, took over the Michigan coaching role in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh led the team to a national championship before departing for a job as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

He led the team to a winning 9-3 season in 2025, and its ranked no. 18 in the country.

Moore had three years left on his contract, for which he drew a salary of over $6 million per year.
