Mike Tyson and Jake Paul will be slapped with suspensions immediately after boxing fight
by Patrick Austen-Hardy, Martin Domin · Wales OnlineRegardless of the outcome, both Mike Tyson and Jake Paul will face a suspension after their contentious boxing match.
Tyson, at 58 years old, is stepping out of retirement to take on the YouTuber in what will be the former WBC heavyweight champion's first professionally sanctioned boxing match since his defeat to Kevin McBride in 2005. This decision has caused concern among many in the boxing community who fear Tyson could be seriously injured.
The Tyson-Paul fight has sparked division in a way few fights in the sport's history have. When it is all over and a victor has been crowned, both men will have to bide their time before they can return to the ring.
Paul recently said Tyson was the person who wanted the fight to be a professional bout rather than an exhibition, like the last time he stepped into the ring to face Roy Jones Jr in 2020. Due to it being sanctioned, they must adhere to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the body responsible for overseeing the fight.
Consequently, they will be mandated to rest for a minimum of seven days after the fight. The board stipulates a three-day rest period for each round fought, reports the Irish Star.
If the bout between Tyson and Paul goes the full eight rounds, they'll be required to rest for at least 24 days. Post-fight, both fighters will undergo medical assessments to ensure no serious injuries have been sustained.
Should either fighter lose by technical knockout - a situation where the referee determines a fighter can't safely continue - the defeated party will need to rest for a minimum of 30 days. If there is a knockout - where a fighter is floored and fails to rise before the count of ten - a 60-day rest period will be enforced.
Regardless of the outcome, many boxing enthusiasts will hope Tyson does not strap on a pair of boxing gloves again. On the other hand, Paul is expected to return to the ring without much delay and will likely call out Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez if he is victorious.
Paul, who used to be an actor for Disney, boasts victories over Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship star Mike Perry and Ryan Bourland, both by knockout in 2024. His current boxing record stands at 10-1, with his sole defeat being a split-decision against Tommy Fury last year.
Tyson, on the other hand, retired in 2005 with a record of 50 wins, 44 knockouts, and six losses. Three of these defeats occurred in the last four fights of his career, against Lennox Lewis, Danny Williams, and McBride.
Ahead of their clash at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Tyson stirred up tension by slapping Paul during the weigh-in ceremony. However, the Ohio native remains confident that he can knock Tyson out in front of an estimated crowd of 80,000 spectators.
Millions more will be tuning in from home on Netflix, marking the first time the streaming giant has ever broadcast live boxing.
