Historic first British lockout of front row for British Grand Prix

George Russell has built on his success in Austria by securing pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver has endured somewhat of a frustrating campaign, yet his form over recent races has given reason for optimism.

With Championship leader Max Verstappen struggling in his Red Bull, there was an opportunity to capitalise, and Russell did just that to finish ahead of two other home favourites.

Russell was 0.171 seconds faster than teammate Lewis Hamilton, who will be encouraged by Russell's and his car getting the better of the rest of the field.

However, the pace of Lando Norris cannot be ignored, the McLaren man still qualifying in third despite needing to abort his final hot lap.

Verstappen will be equally content with fourth spot having had issues with his own car, the Dutchman just 0.384 seconds adrift of Russell.

How did the rest of the field fare?

McLaren's Oscar Piastri was the best of the rest, qualifying just 0.034 seconds behind Verstappen, with Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg enjoying a stellar drive to earn sixth place.

On a disappointing day for Ferrari, Carlos Sainz Jr was only able to qualify in seventh spot, with Aston Martin's Lance Stroll in eighth.

Williams driver Alex Albon and the other Aston Martin in Fernando Alonso completed the top 10, Charles Leclerc having to make do with 11th position.

Sergio Perez was all the way back in 18th as he continues his spell of poor form in the second Red Bull.
