Kundapur, Apr 25: A massive wild bison that had fallen into the Varahi canal near Asodu Sri Kumar Mahalingeshwara Temple in the limits of Kalavar gram panchayat was rescued by the forest department on Saturday after a 20-hour operation.
The wild bison, which had reportedly come into the residential area from the nearby forest in search of water and food, accidentally fell into the Varahi canal on Friday. Local residents immediately informed the forest department.
Acting on the information, forest officials and staff rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation with the support of local residents. On Friday itself, soil was filled into the canal to help the animal climb out easily. However, the bison was unable to come out and had to remain inside the canal throughout the night.
The rescue operation resumed on Saturday morning. Forest personnel added more soil to create a slope and, with the help of a JCB and ropes, successfully lifted the wild bison out of the canal.
Thus, the wild bison, which had remained trapped in the canal for nearly 20 hours, was finally rescued.
Former Kalavar gram panchayat member Chandra Poojary of Kalavar was present during the operation, which was carried out under the guidance of range forest officer Raghavendra. Deputy forest officers Vinay and Guru Nayak, along with staff members Malathi, Ranjith, Sunil, and Ashok, also participated in the rescue mission.
