The world's first 500Hz OLED gaming monitor is here, thanks to Samsung
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 is the model in question, but you might have to wait a while to get your hands on this ultrafast display.
by Niall Walsh · PCGamesNIt was only a matter of time. Samsung has just revealed the world's first 500Hz OLED gaming display, the Odyssey G6 OLED. This 27-inch display has much more going for it than a high refresh rate and an OLED panel, but you could be waiting a while to get your hands on one.
On paper, this Samsung display will be one of the best OLED gaming monitors when it hits store shelves. The only issue is that it will be released in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia before it hits global markets, and the exact timeline for release hasn't been revealed.
The headline feature of the Samsung Odyssey G6 OLED is, of course, its rapid 500Hz refresh rate. This will make it the fastest OLED gaming monitor ever released, beating out the several LG-panel-based displays that top out at 480Hz, such as the LG Ultragear 32GS95UE and Sony Inzone M10S.
According to Samsung's press release, the Odyssey G6 OLED also will have a 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. The display is also Pantone validated, which should result in high color accuracy.
As for its resolution, the Odyssey G6 OLED uses a 1440p panel, meaning the native resolution is 2,560 x 1,440. It comes with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 accreditation, signalling its ability to hit very deep black levels while still hitting 500nits of peak brighness, as well as delivering the extra vivid colors demanded of HDR.
The G6 OLED is also Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certified, meaning you'll get image tearing and stutter removal (adaptive sync) regardless of which brand you use.
If you're worried about burn-in, which is a common concern for OLED displays, then Samsung has you covered with Safeguard+ to prevent such incidents, even during extended play sessions.
For more of a sense of what Samsung's QD-OLED panel technology can do, check out our MSI MPG 271QRX QD review. That panel can hit 360Hz, and we were already very impressed with that experience so we have high hopes for Samsung's new 500Hz display. You can also read our LG Ultragear 32GS95UE review to get a sense of what a 480Hz panel can do, though it only delivers that speed at 1080p.
