'Purple Rain' musical to open on Broadway in spring 2027
by Annie Martin · UPIJuly 27 (UPI) -- The Purple Rain stage musical is heading to Broadway in 2027.
The Schubert Organization announced in a press release Monday that the production will begin previews March 12 at the Majestic Theatre in New York and officially open April 12.
Purple Rain is based on the 1984 film of the same name, which stars and features music by late singer Prince. The movie follows an aspiring musician, known as "The Kid" (Prince), in his quest for stardom.
The Oscar-winning film features a soundtrack album performed by Prince that includes such hits as "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry" and "Purple Rain."
Saheem Ali will direct the stage adaptation, which features music and lyrics by Prince, a book by Peter Duhan, a music team led by Jason Michael Webb and choreography by Ebony Williams.
"Minneapolis, 1984. A new era of music television is creating overnight stars. A magnetic young performer known as 'The Kid' seems like the perfect frontman to lead his bandmates to stardom. But when his past threatens everything he's build, he'll have to sing his way out of the darkness and into the spotlight where he belongs," an official synopsis reads.
Casting has yet to be announced, although Kris Kollins played The Kid in the Minneapolis stage production that debuted in 2025.
The real-life Prince died of an accidental overdose at age 57 in April 2016.
