June 2 (UPI) -- A U.S. soldier and a British servicemember died during military training in northern Iraq over the weekend, both militaries said.

U.S. Army Central and Third Army issued a statement late Monday announcing the death of a U.S. Army soldier during a military training accident at Erbil Air Base on Sunday.

Britain's Ministry of Defense separately announced that a servicemember had died Sunday in a training accident in northern Iraq.

No further details were provided.

The U.S. Army said the identity of the deceased would be withheld until 24 hours after next of kin notifications, while the British Defense Ministry said the service person's family has been notified and has "requested a period of grace before further details are released."

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends at this sad time," it said.

The deaths occurred a month after two U.S. soldiers in Morocco died after they fell from a cliff into the ocean. They were reported missing May 2, with their bodies discovered and retrieved about two weeks later.
