Caitriona Balfe to star in 'Ascension' thriller from Alfonso Cuaron
by Annie Martin · UPIAug. 10 (UPI) -- Apple TV has acquired Ascension, a new series from Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron.
The streaming service announced in a press release Monday that Outlander actress Caitriona Balfe will star in and executive produce the new psychological horror thriller.
Based on the Adam Nevill novel Last Days, Ascension follows Rose, a documentary filmmaker and recent divorcee "who is brilliant at uncovering others' truths but struggling to resolve her own."
"When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings -- until she discovers something far more insidious beneath," an official synopsis reads.
Cuaron, Carlos Cuaron, Natalie Erika James and Christian White will write the series, with James and White to serve as showrunners and James to act as lead director. Both Cuarons will also executive produce.
Ascension will mark Balfe's first starring TV role since Outlander ended in May.
The show is Alfonso Cuaron's second for Apple TV following the 2024 thriller Disclaimer, starring Cate Blanchett.
