Los Angeles Rams sign QB Matthew Stafford to $55M extension

May 22 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Rams signed veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford to a one-year extension through the 2027-28 season, the NFC West franchise announced.

Sources told ESPN, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Post that the pact is worth $55 million and will the reigning NFL MVP under contract through 2027-28.

Stafford's deal in 2027-28 can rise as much as $60 million if he reaches certain incentives.

The 17-year veteran led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and a career-high 46 touchdowns over 17 starts last season. He also threw just eight interceptions in 2025-26. The three-time Pro Bowl selection and 2025-26 first-team All-Pro won Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2011 while he was with the Detroit Lions.

Stafford, 38, is the NFL's active leader in pass attempts and quarterback comebacks, with 39, which ranks No. 4 all-time. He ranks second among active players in completions, yards and interceptions and third and passing scores, with 423.

The Super Bowl LVI champion (2022) will lead a reshuffled quarterbacks room in 2026, which features Ty Simpson, Stetson Bennett and Matthew Caldwell. Simpson joined the Rams as the No. 26 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Bennett was a fourth-round pick in 2023, while Caldwell signed this off-season as an undrafted free agent.

Rams players will report Tuesday for the first day of voluntary team activities. Mandatory minicamp will be held June 15 and 16.
