Ruben Amorim makes feelings very clear on Manchester United's heritage
by Steve Wollaston, https://www.facebook.com/stevewollastonjournalist/, Alex Turk · Birmingham LiveRuben Amorim, the new Manchester United boss, has expressed his desire to dine with club legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Keane as part of his efforts to immerse himself in the culture of the Red Devils. The 39 year old Portuguese tactician is set to begin his tenure at Old Trafford today (Monday), aiming to restore the club's former glory.
Amorim previously led Sporting to two Primeira Liga titles after a 20-year drought, and he's on track to secure a third consecutive title this season. The situation at United is somewhat similar to what he faced at Sporting, with the club having struggled to secure major silverware since Ferguson's retirement.
Despite several managerial changes, the last Premier League title was won under Ferguson in 2013. Amorim is well aware of the enormity of the task ahead, especially following the intense scrutiny since his appointment as Erik ten Hag's successor.
As part of his adaptation process, he plans to seek guidance from some of the club's most revered figures. Amorim ended his stint at Sporting with an exciting 4-2 comeback win against Braga yesterday (Sunday), overturning a 2-0 half-time deficit.
Speaking after the game at the Municipal Stadium, Ruben Amorim was quizzed on which Manchester United legend he'd prefer to share a meal with – Sir Alex Ferguson, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona or Rio Ferdinand. In a light-hearted moment reminiscent of the last day of school, Amorim said: "Alex Ferguson was someone very special, he's above everyone else at that club.", reports the Express.
He added, "But it would be difficult to choose anyone. I will try to have lunch and dinner with all of them."
As the new man at the helm, Amorim is charged with propelling United forward following years of underperformance, a period dominated by their city rivals.
His tenure kicks off on November 24 with a trip to Ipswich Town in the Premier League, followed swiftly by a crucial Europa League encounter with Bodo/Glimt at Old Trafford.
