Apple issues 'important' update to millions - check your iPhone now

Apple iPhone users are being advised to install a new 'important' update on their phones. The US tech firm released iOS 18.0.1 overnight.

It includes a number of bug fixes, as well as patching some security issues on devices. One of the bugs affects audio messages in messages.

It captures a few seconds of audio before the microphone indicator is activated. Another glitch, confirmed by Apple, might also mean a user's saved passwords could be read aloud by the VoiceOver function.

Apple said in its Software Update notes: "This update provides important bug fixes and security updates for your iPhone." Other fixes include mending a bug which affects the touch screen on the new iPhone 16 models, Mirror reports.

The update also addresses camera, messaging and performance issues. Here are the key features addressed in the iOS 18.0.01:

• Touch screen may be temporarily unresponsive in certain circumstances on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models
• Camera may freeze when recording macro mode video on the Ultra Wide camera in 4K with HDR turned off on iPhone 16 Pro models
• Messages may unexpectedly quit when replying to a message with a shared Apple Watch face
• Performance may be impacted due to an issue with memory allocation on some iPhone models

To make sure your device is free from any of the problems, you should head to the Settings menu and tap General, then Software Update. You should see the iOS 18.0.1 update, which can be installed immediately or scheduled to be loaded overnight.

It is about 500MB in size so make sure you have enough data if you are trying to download it on the move, otherwise it might be best to install it when you have access to a broadband connection.
