JUST IN: Ex-Chiefs star gets career lifeline with PSL return

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke has secured a fresh opportunity in the Betway Premiership after spending several months without a club.

Matsheke has returned to Stellenbosch FC for a second spell, giving the 27-year-old another chance to revive his career after a difficult period away from the top flight.

The midfielder was released by Marumo Gallants in December 2025 without making a competitive appearance for the club.

He had joined Gallants at the start of the 2025/26 season after leaving Motsepe Foundation Championship side Kruger United, but quickly fell out of favour following Alexandre Lafitte's arrival as head coach.

Matsheke had subsequently been linked with several clubs, including Magesi FC and his former side Kruger United, while TS Galaxy were also previously monitoring his situation.

Matsheke gets second chance at Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch have now handed the former Chiefs academy product a route back into the top flight.

"Stellenbosch Football Club is pleased to announce that midfielder Darrel Matsheke has rejoined the Club for a second spell," the club stated.

"Matsheke previously represented Stellenbosch during the 2023-24 season and was part of the squad that won the Carling Knockout trophy, notably scoring the winning spot-kick during the penalty shootout victory over TS Galaxy in the final.

"He ultimately made 12 appearances across all competitions during his first stint in the Winelands, before going on to play for the likes of Pretoria Callies and Kruger United."

Matsheke has his say

"It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC," Matsheke said.

"It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back.

"I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more.

"I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there's a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals."

Matsheke will wear the No. 31 jersey this season and could make his second Stellenbosch debut when the Maroons take on Kruger United in the league this weekend.
