At least R33 million at stake for Downs

Mamelodi Sundowns stand to earn no less than R33 million in the next phase of the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Despite their recent elimination from the CAF Champions League in the second preliminary round at the hands of Angolan side Wiliete SC, Sundowns still have plenty to play for over the next few months.

On 8 November, Masandawana will face current CAF Confederation Cup holders USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup final in Pretoria.

However, their schedule is not expected to get any easier, as they will also compete for the FIFA Challenger Cup on 12 December, the penultimate match of the Intercontinental Cup.

The Tshwane giants will face the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas, a fixture between the champions of South America and North America.

According to CAFOnline, CAF representatives Pyramids FC earned $2 million (approximately R33 million) in prize money at the 2025 edition of the Intercontinental Cup after losing the FIFA Challenger Cup.

Prize money

Although FIFA is yet to confirm the prize money for the 2026 edition, the financial rewards are expected to be no less than those offered last year.

The overall winners of the Intercontinental Cup are expected to earn at least $5 million (around R83 million), while the runners-up could receive no less than $4 million (around R66 million).
