Chiefs marquee signing, Phili available for the derby?

by · KickOff

The Kaizer Chiefs faithful will be pleased with the latest update on Langelihle Phili as the club prepares to lock horns with traditional rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.

Marquee signing Langelihle Phili was spotted back on the training pitch at the club’s base in Naturena.

Why Phili has been absent

The 21-year-old winger has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in late August. His prolonged absence has left a notable void in Amakhosi’s attack, forcing head coach Fernando Da Cruz to keep adjusting his tactical options.

In Phili’s absence, Da Cruz has turned to Pule Mmodi and Asanele Velebayi, who have both featured on the left wing for Amakhosi.

The return of the electrifying attacker adds a dynamic dimension to the Glamour Boys' offensive line just in time for the Soweto derby.

Chiefs' options have also been significantly strengthened by the high-profile return of Bafana Bafana defender Rushwin Dortley, who made his competitive comeback after 19 months on the sidelines.

Da Cruz' tough Phili decision

Having missed several weeks of competitive action, Da Cruz has a major decision to make on Phili: deciding to field the winger, who is unlikely to be match fit, or taking the safe route of gradually building up Phili's fitness.

A definitive victory in the Soweto derby carries importance for Kaizer Chiefs beyond the three points. Overcoming the Buccaneers would break a frustrating spell of consecutive stalemates in the Betway Premiership, where five draws have stalled Amakhosi's early momentum.

Furthermore, a positive result against an in-form Pirates outfit will serve as a statement of intent for Da Cruz’s ongoing rebuilding process.

The clash against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates is scheduled to be played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off set for 15:30 SAST.
