Top 5 youngest players to win Footballer of the Season

After Relebohile Mofokeng won PSL's Footballer of the Season award, KickOff looks at the top five youngest players to earn the accolade since its inception in 2008.

4. Khune, Billiat, Lorch (26)

All of former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, Khama Billiat, then at Mamelodi Sundowns, and former Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch were 26 when they were crowned Footballer of the Season.

Khune won four individual awards, including Footballer of the 2012/13 Season after helping Amakhosi win a league double, while Billiat was the best player of 2015/16 after Sundowns also won a league double, and Lorch won the coveted trophy in 2019, though Bucs did not win the league.

3. Sibusiso Vilakazi (24 years & six months)

Vilakazi was a surprise winner of the accolade for the 2013/14 campaign, as he also claimed the Players' Player of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

The man who came through Wits' juniors was eventually signed by Sundowns a season later and before The Clever Boys could win a first league title in 96 years.

2. Percy Tau (24)

Tau bagged the top individual award, including the Players' Player of the Season post the 2017/18 campaign, after inspiring The Brazilians to the league title.

The accolades and performances earned him a dream move to Europe, signing for Brighton and Hove Albion.

Relebohile Mofokeng (21 years & 9 months)

Mofokeng, who turns 22 in October, left a lasting impact after winning the major personal accolades following a treble-winning season with Pirates, while he is already living his dream after linking up with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

1. Thulani Serero (21)

Serero remains the youngest player to win the award, since it was first introduced in the 2008/09 season.

The former Ajax Cape Town talisman also took home Players' Player and Young Player of the Season in 2010/11 and earned a move to Ajax Amsterdam.
