"When last did we score five?"

Former top goalkeeper in the Premier Soccer League, Tshepo Motsoeneng, is impressed with Bafana Bafana's new way of playing — and he was not alone in that sentiment after Wednesday's demolition job.

South Africa were ruthless in front of goal against Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with two goals from Relebohile Mofokeng and one each from Yaya Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh seeing a free-scoring Bafana cruise to a 5-0 victory in Cairo.

"The response was sweet"

Motsoeneng felt the performance was the perfect answer to the criticism and noise that preceded the match, praising the team's focused and economical approach.

"After all the noise ahead of the Eritrea game, I believe this was a response, and the response was sweet. Bafana Bafana focused on economical football, they wanted goals. It depends on whether we want to see good football without goals, or football with plenty of goals and progressing. I mean, when last did we score five? I don't remember us winning 5-0," Motsoeneng told KickOff.

"No more weaker national teams"

The former shot-stopper was keen to stress that the opposition should not be underestimated, pointing to the changing landscape of African football where so-called minnows are increasingly capable of causing upsets.

"Yesterday we saw a Bafana Bafana team that didn't wanna waste time entertaining an empty stadium, a team that was there to score goals. I'm happy with the result, I don't look at the opposition. If you remember very well, nowadays the likes of Nigeria are getting beaten by anybody. So there are no more weaker national teams in qualifiers," Motsoeneng concluded.
