New feat at stake for Downs winger

by · KickOff

Tashreeq Matthews will take a step towards reaching another personal milestone in the two matches at Mamelodi Sundowns though he is now walking with a risk tag.

Matthews has now played 78 games in a row at Sundowns.

This puts him on the trails of the longest run of consecutive appearances for an outfield player attached to a South African club.

The lanky winger has had minutes in every official match for Sundowns since he came on as a substitute against Kaizer Chiefs on April 13, 2025.

Since then, he has neither been suspended nor injured.

That is a stretch of 18 months of non-stop football which eventually earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up during the last FIFA dates.

In that time, he has played over 5000 minutes, scored 13 and provided just as many assists.

Last season, Matthews featured in 50 matches played by the Tshwane giants, starting 38 and coming on from the bench in 12.

This season he has played in all 15.

The next two games against Wiliete Sport Clube de Benguela on Friday in the second leg of the CAF Champions League second qualifying round and Tuesday’s Carling KnockOut Cup will take him to 80 games in a row.

However, with three bookings to his name already this season, it leaves him on the brink of suspension.

The next caution that he gets in any of the domestic competition games will trigger a one-match suspension and put an end to his consecutive count of appearances.

Sundowns’ domestic calendar fixtures have Marumo and Durban City next.
