DDC: Title race going down to the wire
by Kickoff Reporter · KickOffMamelodi Sundowns kept their DStv Diski Challenge title hopes alive after defeating the holders Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.
The defending champions looked to redeem themselves after last weekend’s loss to Stellenbosch FC and halt the Brazilians’ title hopes.
However, the Tshwane giants came with other ideas through a first-half double by Sipho Ngqakabana.
The title will be decided on the final day of the season when Sundowns lock horns with Orlando Pirates.
Chippa United 0-2 Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates took a big step towards the DStv Diski Challenge title through a 2-0 victory over bottom-placed Chippa United at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.
In addition, it is also a fifth successive victory for the Buccaneers who haven’t lost since going down to rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby at the end of March.
Goals in either side of the half by Mpho Padime and Oratile Rantasi steered the Buccaneers to maximum points.
Orbit College 4-2 TS Galaxy
Orbit College registered a third successive victory and cemented sixth spot following an emphatic 4-2 victory over the inconsistent TS Galaxy at the Dobsonville Stadium.
There was no shortage of action right from the start with Thembinkosi Soko giving Orbit the lead before Makhama Rantoa levelled.
Orbit raced further clear as Lefa Ganabo, Jordan Marks and Thabang Mahlangu profited with a penalty in the dying minutes by Lakhama Gqongo given the Rockets a second consolation.
Richards Bay FC 3-0 Polokwane City
Richards Bay FC ended a two-match winless run to go ninth on the table after crushing bottom-placed Polokwane City 3-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
The Natal Rich Boys made a dominant start and took the lead right on the stroke of halftime through a smart finish by Sanele Simelane.
Rise and Shine continued to bear the brunt and a penalty five minutes into the second half by Khayalethu Ndlangamandla was complemented by Luyanda Khumalo.
Stellenbosch FC 4-0 Marumo Gallants FC
Stellenbosch FC build on their victory over the reigning champions Kaizer Chiefs and brushed aside Marumo Gallants FC 4-0 at the Lentelus Sportsground.
It is back-to-back victories for the two-time champions who cemented fifth-place on the table, as Gallants remain tenth with successive defeats to boot.
Siwelele FC 2-1 Sekhukhune United
Siwelele FC confirmed third-place after coming from a goal down and recorded a 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Dobsonville Stadium.
Babina Noko made a positive start and grabbed the lead in the 20th minute courtesy of a smartly taken finish by the promising Tlou Lekgau.
Siwe bounced back after halftime as goals in the closing stages of by Tokollo Moiloa and Banele Khumalo proved efficient for the maximum points over Babina Noko.
Durban City 1-3 AmaZulu
AmaZulu claimed the bragging rights in the KwaZulu-Natal derby and scrapped past Durban City 3-1 in their penultimate clash of the season at the Chatsworth Stadium.
Kurt Lentjies’s boys have now secured back-to-back victories to jump into the top eight, while it is yet another loss for the Team of Choice who languished 13th on the table.
Golden Arrows 3-5 Magesi FC
Golden Arrows saw a three-goal lead fell off their grasp and capitulated to a thumping 5-3 loss at the expense of Magesi FC at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
Abafana Besthende were in control of the match particularly after goals either side of the half by Sphamandla Shangase, Sfundo Shezi and Andiswa Booysen.
Dikwena Tsa Meetse did have a cushion to build on albeit an own-goal, but wrestled complete control through goals one after the other and secured a commanding victory.
