UNLV loses key player to injury for conference opener at Hawaii

UNLV center Austin Boyd will miss his team’s Mountain West football opener at Hawaii on Saturday night.

Boyd is expected to be out at least a few weeks with what appears to be an injured ankle.

He went down in the fourth quarter of a 27-21 season-opening loss to Memphis and UNLV immediately began to struggle up front.

Without the senior manning the line, UNLV allowed four sacks and had a fumbled snap. The Rebels totaled minus-14 yards on 12 plays with Boyd on the sidelines.

Also listed on the conference availability report as expected to miss the Hawaii game is true freshman defensive lineman Poe Purcell, who played a majority of snaps across the front against Memphis.
