3A-1A state roundup: Pahrump Valley softball, Lake Mead baseball win titles
by Alex Wright / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalBoulder City’s baseball team lost to Northern champion Elko 6-2 in the if-necessary game for the Class 3A state title Saturday at Spanish Springs.
The Eagles (21-14), the South’s No. 1 seed, came out of the losers bracket and defeated Elko 11-1 in the morning Saturday to force the winner-take-all game for the title. Elko finishes 31-7.
Class 2A
No. 2S Lake Mead Academy 15, No. 1S Needles 5: At Needles, the Eagles (21-6) scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take the lead and rolled to defeat Needles (17-14) to win the Class 2A state title.
Ethan Ross had four RBIs for Lake Mead Academy, the South’s No. 2 seed, and Reese Robinson drove in three runs. Hudson Smith had two RBIs for Needles, the South’s No. 1 seed.
It’s the fourth baseball state title for Lake Mead Academy and its second straight 2A title.
Class 1A
No. 1S Pahranagat Valley 5, No. 1N Smith Valley 1: At Smith Valley, the Panthers (22-7-1), the Southern Region champion, defeated Northern champion Smith Valley (21-4) to win the Class 1A state title.
It’s the eighth baseball state title for Pahranagat Valley and first since 2017. Colin Howard was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Pahranagat Valley.
Softball
Class 3A
No. 2S Pahrump Valley 12, No. 2N Lowry 1: At Spanish Springs, Pahrump Valley won an if-necessary game over Lowry (31-7) to win the Class 3A softball state title.
The Trojans (33-9), the South’s No. 2 seed, lost to Lowry, the North’s No. 2 seed, 9-5 in the morning to force the winner-take-all game for the title. It’s the fifth softball state title for Pahrump Valley and first since 2019.
Riley Saldana, Jaycie Hayes and Mariah Gray each recorded three RBIs for Pahrump Valley in the if-necessary game.
Class 2A
No. 1S Needles 10, No. 1N Battle Mountain 6: At Needles, Needles (20-15) won in the morning 18-3 to force the if-necessary game and the Mustangs, the Southern Region champion, pulled through to come out of the losers bracket to win the Class 2A state title over Battle Mountain, the Northern region champion.
It’s the 18th softball state title for Needles, which is a state record. Battle Mountain finishes 31-5.
In an all-North 1A softball final, Wells defeated Pyramid Lake 7-3 to win the title.
