LETTER: The more viewpoints the better

by · Las Vegas Review-Journal

I was disappointed to see the Las Vegas Review-Journal discontinue distribution of the Las Vegas Sun insert. I do not pretend to know the legal or business complexities behind their agreement, but I do know this: Readers benefit when they are exposed to more than one viewpoint.

The Sun generally leans left, while the Review-Journal leans right. As someone who leans conservative, I often disagree with much of what I read in the Sun. Yet I still value reading it, because it challenges my thinking and exposes me to perspectives different from my own.

That is healthy for a community.

The Review-Journal was stronger when readers could conveniently access both publications in one package. Of course, the Sun should pay a fair market rate for printing and distribution. If the economics do not work, that is a legitimate business reality. But if a fair arrangement can be reached, both papers — and especially the public — would benefit.
