Duarte, Covington homers spark Shadow Ridge in 5A softball playoffs
by Jeff Wollard / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalLoa Duarte and Chloe Covington homered for third-seeded Shadow Ridge, which controlled the middle innings of an elimination game Wednesday for a 6-2 home win over fourth-seeded Centennial in the 5A Southern League softball playoffs.
Breanna Nielsen added three hits for Shadow Ridge, which plays Coronado at 2 p.m. Thursday at Arbor View. The winner of that game plays Arbor View Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the losers-bracket semifinals.
No. 5 Coronado 6, No. 7 Bishop Gorman 3: At Coronado, Bailey Goldberg had a home run, a triple and two RBIs to lead the Cougars to a losers-bracket victory over Bishop Gorman.
Caleigh Burns and Chase Magdaleno had two hits apiece to help Coronado.
4A state softball playoffs
No. 4M Las Vegas 14, No. 3S SLAM! Nevada 9: At Russell Road Park, Nora Anaya went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Wildcats past the Bulls.
Sophia Ortiz added three hits and three RBIs for Las Vegas, which plays at top-seeded Faith Lutheran at 4 p.m. Thursday. SLAM! Nevada will play a losers-bracket game against Legacy or Foothill at 4 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.
No. 2S Foothill 17, No. 4D Sierra Vista 5: At Basic, Camren Van Thomme had a grand slam and four RBIs for the Falcons as they seized momentum early on the way to a win over the Mountain Lions.
AliAna Edwards added a home run and four RBIs to help Foothill, which plays at top-seeded Legacy at 4 p.m. Thursday. Sierra Vista will play a losers-bracket game against Faith Lutheran or Las Vegas at 4 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.
No. 3D Spring Valley 3, No. 3M Clark 2: At Clark, the Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Clark.
Spring Valley plays at top-seeded Tech at 4 p.m. Thursday. Clark faces Desert Oasis or Silverado in a losers-bracket game at 4 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.
No. 4S Silverado 16, No. 2M Cimarron-Memorial 6: At Cimarron, Leiani Malakaua had two home runs, a double and four RBIs to help the Skyhawks roll to a six-inning victory over the Spartans.
Malia Pacheco went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs for Silverado, which plays second-seeded Desert Oasis at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bonanza. Cimarron faces Tech or Spring Valley in the losers bracket at 4 p.m. Friday.
4A state baseball playoffs
No. 4M Cheyenne 5, No. 3S Canyon Springs 4: At Durango, Raymundo Chevalier went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs as the Desert Shields edged the Pioneers in first-round action.
Adrian Catalan went 2-for-3 with a double to help Cheyenne, which faces top-seeded Silverado at 4 p.m. Thursday at Las Vegas High School. Canyon Springs plays a losers-bracket game at 4 p.m. Friday against Clark or Rancho.
No. 2S Rancho 11, No. 4D SLAM! Nevada 0: At Rancho, the Rams scored nine runs in the third inning and cruised to a five-inning win over the Bulls.
Rancho plays at top-seeded Clark at 4 p.m. Thursday. SLAM! Nevada plays Silverado or Cheyenne in the losers bracket at 4 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.
No. 3M Doral Academy 15, No. 3D Del Sol 9: At Del Sol, Zaydin Kealohi went 2-for-2 with a triple and five RBIs as the Dragons outlasted Del Sol for a victory.
Rayden Canda added a 2-for-5 performance with a double to help Doral Academy, which plays at top-seeded Mater East at 4 p.m. Thursday. Del Sol plays Tech or Spring Valley in a losers’ bracket game at 4 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.
No. 2M Spring Valley 16, No. 4S Western 5: At Western, Damon Kodesko went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as the Grizzlies defeated the Warriors in six innings.
Keegan Cushenberry had two doubles and two RBIs to help Spring Valley, which plays at second-seeded Tech at 4 p.m. Thursday. Western plays Mater East or Doral Academy in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.
4A state boys volleyball quarterfinals
No. 1S Mojave 3, No. 2L Del Sol 0: At Mojave, Kaleb Law racked up 16 digs, 15 kills, two aces and a block while leading the Rattlers to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 win over the Dragons.
Aaron Bagalawis had 31 assists to help Mojave, which plays at Sky Pointe in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Monday.
No. 1D Sky Pointe 3, No. 3S Sunrise Mountain 1: At Sky Pointe, the Eagles advanced by defeating the Grizzlies 25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14.
No. 1M Desert Oasis 3, No. 2D Cimarron-Memorial 0: At Desert Oasis, Jaiden Alarcon finished with 15 assists, six digs and three service aces in the Diamondbacks’ 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 victory over the Spartans.
Desert Oasis hosts Liberty in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Monday.
No. 1L Liberty 3, No. 2S Las Vegas 0: At Liberty, Jordan Valdez had 17 kills to help the Patriots roll to a 25-23, 25-13, 25-11 win over Las Vegas.
Zee Chavis added 39 assists and four kills for Liberty, and teammate Kaden Co had 12 kills.
