LETTER: On the Las Vegas NBA franchise
by Adam Silbert New York, New York · Las Vegas Review-JournalRe: “NBA close to choosing winning Las Vegas expansion bid at $12B-$13B” (Tuesday Review-Journal):
I’m not sure the NBA should cite potential tourism as one of the factors used to justify the $10 billion expansion fee portion of the bid. This isn’t like the Las Vegas Raiders, where people may fly in from out of town for eight or nine regular season home games a year. I may be in a different market, but New York Knicks games are filled predominantly by repeat fans from nearby New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, or by people going after work with company tickets or splitting season packages. The Madison Square Garden area has plenty of tourists too, yet games tend to be hyper-local.
