Roundup: Palo Verde, Durango stave off elimination in 5A baseball playoffs
by Alex Wright / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalPalo Verde, the Mountain League’s No. 3 seed, defeated Shadow Ridge, the Sky League’s No. 4 seed, 9-5 in a Class 5A Southern Region baseball tournament elimination game Friday at Centennial.
Palo Verde (25-8) advances to another elimination game at 1 p.m. Thursday at a to-be-determined site. The Panthers will play the loser of Bishop Gorman-Desert Oasis, which play in a winners bracket contest at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gorman.
Palo Verde would have played Coronado in a Saturday elimination game. But earlier Friday, Coronado was pulled out of the playoffs for an unspecified reason by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.
Coronado had lost to Palo Verde 2-0 on Wednesday. The Cougars would have played the loser of Basic-Faith Lutheran in an elimination game Friday, but earlier Thursday the NIAA pulled Basic out of the playoffs after the Wolves used an ineligible player for the whole season. Coronado had advances to Saturday’s game before being pulled out early Friday.
Shadow Ridge finishes 11-18. The game was played at Centennial due to renovations at Palo Verde’s field.
No. 4M Durango 10, No. 3S Legacy 1: At Legacy, Luke DeSoto had three RBIs to help Durango, the Mountain League’s No. 4 seed, defeated Legacy, the Sky League’s No. 3 seed, in an elimination game.
Durango (13-17) advances to another elimination game at 4 p.m. Monday. The Trailblazers will play the winner of Liberty-Arbor View, which play in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Arbor View had won its opening-round game against Desert Oasis on Thursday, but the NIAA ruled Arbor View’s win as a forfeit, which put Desert Oasis back into the winners bracket and swapped places in the bracket with the Aggies.
No reason was given by the NIAA for Arbor View’s forfeit.
Freshman Eron Galvan earned the win on the mound for Durango, pitching a complete game with five strikeouts. Galvan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs at the plate.
Legacy finishes 14-16.

4A Mountain League play-in
Las Vegas High 13, Mojave 10: At Las Vegas, the Wildcats edged out the Rattlers in a play-in game for the Sky League’s No. 4 seed and final spot in the Class 4A state tournament.
Las Vegas (13-7) will play SLAM! Nevada, the Sky League’s No. 3 seed, in an opening-round game of the state tournament at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Russell Road Park.
Mojave finishes 9-9.
