LETTER: Trump election plan a bad idea

The Trump administration proposal to entrust the U.S. Postal Service with an enhanced role during the 2026 midterms and future elections assumes that the agency is capable of performing the required work. It has been my experience that it is unable to perform timely deliveries or insure the security of mail. Recent reports of continued mail theft — including losses of mailbox master keys — highlight this deficiency.

Personally, I have had mailed posted from here to San Diego take more than 10 days in transit. In mid September, I finally received two August issues as well as the current issue of a magazine. My address has not changed. The publisher’s label is correct and intact. A cryptic label “Unable to Forward/For Review” was taped on the August issues.

My experience is doubtless repeated elsewhere. While not typical of my mail service, it hardly inspires confidence in ability of the Post Office to handle new and challenging tasks.

President Donald Trump has long sought to undermine confidence in our elections. His long-held view is that any election he does not win is illegitimate. The fact that he willfully still maintains that he won in 2020 election despite clear evidence that he did not shows his disrespect for the law and the duties of his office.
