UNLV police: Man arrested in on-campus sexual assault held student at knifepoint
by Spencer Levering / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalLas Vegas police on Wednesday arrested a man authorities said sexually assaulted a UNLV student at knifepoint on campus this week.
Jordan Grady, 36, was arrested in connection with the assault, according to the University Police Department.
Online court records show Grady faces 13 felony charges including counts of sexual assault, burglary, assault, battery and first degree kidnapping. Grady also faces four misdemeanor charges of open or gross lewdness.
University police said Grady assaulted the student at knifepoint inside the student’s residence at the Legacy Apartments on the north end of campus around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. The department added that Grady did not know the victim and fled the scene after the assault.
Investigators identified Grady as the suspect around 6 p.m. Wednesday, and Metropolitan Police Department officers booked him into the Clark County Detention Center just before midnight, university police said.
“It is extremely unfortunate and unacceptable this incident occurred at all, much less on our campus,” university police chief Arnold Vasquez said in a statement. “Rest assured that UNLV leadership, UPD, LVMPD and all our law enforcement partners are committed to support the victim through this terrible incident and we will continue to work collaboratively to protect and safeguard the communities we serve.”
In a message to UNLV’s community following the assault, UNLV interim president Chris Heavey said Tuesday he was “deeply troubled” by the incident and that the campus would see heightened police presence in response.
“This news can be distressing and difficult to hear. I assure you that the safety of our students and the entire university community remains our top priority,” Heavey said in part.
Grady’s initial appearance is scheduled for Friday, court records show.
