An Israeli citizen was killed and his son was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in Thailand on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement Sunday.

Neither of the citizens was named.

The Department for Israelis in Distress Abroad and the Israeli embassy in Bangkok are handling the incident along with the family of the deceased, the statement added.

Thailand consistently ranks as one of the world’s most dangerous countries for road traffic, and according to the World Health Organization, it ranks ninth out of 175 member countries for road traffic deaths, with between 14,000 and 22,000 road fatalities per year. According to the WHO, motorcyclists represent over 80 percent of Thailand’s traffic deaths.

Thailand is also among the most popular flight destinations for Israeli tourists, with some statistics showing an average of around 200,000 Israelis visiting annually in recent years.
