Rob Reiner's son Nick officially charged with murder of his parents - and could face death penalty
· GOSS.ieRob Reiner’s son Nick has officially been charged with the murder of his parents – and could face the death penalty if found guilty.
The beloved director was discovered dead on Sunday afternoon at his Brentwood home with his wife, Michele Singer.
On Wednesday, Nick Reiner was charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders in the deaths of the 78-year-old director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
The 32-year-old faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon – a knife.
District Attorney Hochman said: “Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes.”
“Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife’s murder more than 35 years ago, Michele Singer Reiner’s murder, are shocking and tragic,” he added.
“We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken.”
Mr Hochman stated that the charges carry the maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
Still, he added that no decision had been made concerning the death penalty.
At their residence in the Brentwood neighbourhood on the west side of Los Angeles, the couple was discovered dead from what appeared to be stabbing wounds.
When Nick Reiner was apprehended hours later in the Exposition Park neighbourhood, close to the University of Southern California, around four miles from the crime scene, he did not resist, according to the police.
He was supposed to appear in court for the first time earlier on Tuesday, but according to his lawyer, he was not transported from jail to the courthouse due to medical reasons.
