Swift appeared on stage during Johnson’s opening monologue to address her role the movie star’s “literal therapist,” in Johnson’s words.
“I’m not your therapist actually,” Swift said. “You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”
Johnson agreed: “Yeah, well, I have manners.”
Swift continued to describe a typical evening for the two.
“You flop on my couch and overshare, and every so often I just say, ‘Damn that’s crazy,’” Swift said.
Johnson, who has been a marquee presence in the “Fifty Shades” movie franchise, stars in the new movie “Verity” and appears in the new music video for Swift’s “Patient Zero.” She said Swift’s characterization of her role hosting the actor at home seems to describe “therapist.”
But Swift had more to say about their nights.
“And then I go, ‘Oh it’s getting late, I should probably go to bed,’ and then you say ... ”
Johnson chimed in: “Sleepover — yay!”
Their wine sessions end, Swift said, not with a sleepover, but with Pedialyte and a ride home via Swift’s security detail.
Swift made another appearance during the curtain call, bringing out a blue and white cake for Johnson, who turned 37 on Sunday.
“SNL” airs on NBC, a division of NBCUniversal, which is also the parent company of NBC News.
Turnstile was the episode’s musical guest.
