Family of teen driver killed in Dallas crash awaits answers, video shows car flipping
The vehicle flipped over after police say the 18-year-old driver lost control just before midnight on Thursday
by Jala Washington · 5 NBCDFW18-year-old Serenity Rangel could light up any room. But instead of her filling the lives of those who knew her with joy and radiance, candles line a memorial for her in her family's home.
She was killed in a crash last week, after police said she lost control of her vehicle on North Walton Walker Boulevard. Surveillance video from a business nearby captured it flipping over as it veered off the road.
"I'm very devastated," Noemi Rangel-Chacon, Serenity's mother, said. "She was my firstborn, my baby to this day. I would always tell her, 'You're my baby, you're so beautiful, Mija.'"
Serenity would have turned 19 next month, according to her mother. She graduated from Nimitz High School last year and had been taking classes at a community college, her mother told NBC 5.Then Thursday, the tragic crash.
"I had received a message and that was saying, 'I'm sorry for your loss,'" Jayla Carrizales, Serenity's friend, said. "I was confused...So, I proceeded to call her grandmother. And her uncle answered the phone and told me that she wasn't here anymore more."
Serenity's friends and family say she was heading to her boyfriend's place that night. And now, unanswered questions haunt them.
"What was she thinking? Who made her go that fast? What caused it? Was she mad?," Jayla asked in disbelief. "I wish she would have told me how she felt."
As her loved ones prepare for her funeral, they're speaking about what happened just days after, hoping their story can touch even just one person, so no family has to feel what they're feeling.
"There's no need for any of us to be speeding," Rangel-Chacon said. "I myself speed sometimes, and it's like, I think I'm driving safe...We don't know what can happen around us."
Serenity's family is now raising money to help pay for her funeral services. The shock and sadness linger as they try to move forward.
"One of my babies is gone," Rangel-Chacon said. "I won't get to see her anymore. I won't get to her happy self. I won't find something on the floor that I knew felt from her car. I will miss all that."
The crash is still under investigation.
