Texans on a Mission nonprofit to send team to Nepal to help with flood relief

The volunteer nonprofit is mobilizing a small team, taking a 'strike' approach to help villages

Dallas-based volunteer nonprofit Texans on a Mission is sending a team to Nepal to help after the floods devastated the community there.

Hundreds have died, and thousands are still missing, according to officials. With unfathomable damage, the group decided to send a team to help.

A small team of five volunteer members will be helping with immediate needs like food, cookware and filter equipment to clean water.

Texans on a Mission told NBC 5 it plans to travel with at least 100 filters for villages with no power. It will also have more advanced filter equipment to help locals rebuild after the massive flood.

“They have no access to clean water whatsoever," Texans on a Mission Chief Mission Officer John Hall said. "This is a strike force that is meant to mobilize people.”

According to Hall, their group will be working with one of their long-term ministry partners who will get other churches and community leaders involved on the ground.

Experienced volunteers were hand-selected for this mission, with extremely treacherous conditions expected, Hall told NBC 5.

“They've been to Nepal, they know the culture, they know how this region works, and they've been in constant communication with the leaders there since the event happened," Hall said. "They're reviewing notes on what it means to work in an area like this. We're bringing in a partner to do some search and rescue.”

That search and rescue, critical for thousands of families, including at least two from North Texas whose family members are still missing.

It's a disaster that hits close to home, from hundreds of thousands of miles away—reaffirming Texans on a Mission’s will to do what it can.

“It's the kind of devastation and destruction that you hope isn't real," Hall said. “We know that we can't meet all the needs in a situation like this, but we know that, we can go in and we can transform one life at a time, one village at a times, so that's what we're doing.”

The Texans on a Mission team is expected to be there for at least two weeks.
