Affidavit reveals new details in shooting of Dallas ISD officer in North Dallas

An arrest affidavit says Jose Pantoja-Morales took Dallas ISD Officer Justin Jones’ gun and shot him in the leg before fleeing.

Documents obtained by NBC 5 reveal new details about the shooting of a Dallas ISD police officer in North Dallas last week.

According to an arrest affidavit from the Dallas Police Department, 27-year-old Jose Pantoja-Morales was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant after taking Dallas ISD Officer Justin Jones’ gun and shooting him.

Jones told Dallas police he was on routine patrol when someone flagged him down about a man walking on the center median of LBJ Freeway, according to the affidavit.

The document states that Jones found Pantoja-Morales walking along the highway. Pantoja-Morales willingly got into Jones’ patrol car so the officer could perform a “public service” and drop him off at a Walmart off LBJ Freeway, according to the affidavit.

As they pulled into the parking lot, Jones stopped after noticing Pantoja-Morales pulling items out of his work bag, the affidavit states. Jones then tried to remove Pantoja-Morales from the patrol car and turn him to face the vehicle.

According to the affidavit, Pantoja-Morales began resisting, grabbed Jones’ gun and shot the officer once in the leg before running away.

The affidavit states that Pantoja-Morales later admitted taking Jones’ gun and shooting the officer so he could get away.

Dallas ISD said in a statement:

“We are grateful to share that Officer Jones remains in stable condition as he begins his recovery.

“Officer Jones’ actions reflect the true heart of our Dallas ISD police force and security officers. Day in and day out, our officers answer the call with selflessness and courage to protect students, staff, and neighbors. Their commitment to serving others is something we will never take for granted.”

Pantoja-Morales was arrested about a mile from the shooting scene after briefly trying to evade officers. According to the affidavit, he had blood on his boots and shirt when he was found.

Pantoja-Morales is charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, and his bond is set at $500,000. Dallas County jail records also show an immigration hold.
