1 person in custody after 5 injured in New York's Penn Station stabbing, official says

One person, believed to have mental health issues, was taken into custody by Amtrak police, according to a senior law enforcement official.

Five people were injured following a stabbing at New York's Penn Station on Sunday evening, police and fire officials said.

At least one of the victims had serious injuries and all five were taken to a nearby hospital, FDNY officials said, after the 7 p.m. attack.

One person, believed to have mental health issues, was taken into custody by Amtrak police, according to a senior law enforcement official.

The criminal investigation is in its early stages, but the official said there appears to be no signs of terrorism.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had been briefed on the incident and thanked the first responders who attended to the victims.

"My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery," the mayor posted on X.
