Letter to the editor: Security is a requirement, not political football

· The Washington Times

OPINION:

The lack of near-universal support for President Trump’s actions to ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear warheads is unbelievable.

The risks we continue to endure were well explained by Messrs. Boschwitz and Cooper in their Commentary piece, “One Iranian nuclear weapon could black out America” (Web, May 10). Henry Cooper, having served nearly 40 years ago as director of President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative program is well-equipped to warn of such dangers.

Mr. Cooper tried, unsuccessfully at that time, to introduce space-based interceptors into the SDI program. His concern then — which still applies today — was the possibility of a high-altitude nuclear explosion that cripples our electric grid through an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

Even though successive American presidents since Bill Clinton have insisted that Iran should not have nuclear warheads, until President Trump, none took action to prevent Iran from enriching uranium to warhead level.

Adding to this, Mr. Trump has also approved the development of a Golden Dome defensive system designed to provide security against missile attacks. Both of these activities align well with overcoming the dangers outlined by Messrs. Boschwitz and Cooper.

Despite these promising moves by the president, his opponents remain so controlled by their Trump Derangement Syndrome that they continue to disparage American actions to ensure Iran will never be able to obtain nuclear warheads.

It is way past time for these opponents to realize that American security is a national requirement, not a political football.
