Iranian officials will respond to latest U.S. proposal after review, says Foreign Ministry spokesman

by · The Washington Times

Iranian officials are reviewing the latest U.S. peace proposal and will respond with a counterproposal via mediators afterward, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Tehran wants to return to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and accuses Washington of undermining diplomacy by continuing to note nuclear issues in recent proposals, spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said.

Details of the latest proposals exchanged between Iran and the U.S. by Qatari and Pakistani mediators have not been publicized.

Iranian officials said late last month that they proposed a peace deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the U.S. lifting its naval blockade and easing sanctions. President Trump rejected that plan.

Iran and the U.S., which have been at war since late February, have been without a diplomatic agreement since July, when the memorandum broke down over control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Sunday that the latest U.S. response to Iranian demands was “insufficient” and that Washington needs to clarify certain issues before diplomacy can continue.

Mr. Rezaei added that if the U.S. decides to restart attacks, Tehran would not hesitate to target artificial intelligence data centers and communication cables in the region.

Iranian officials have vowed to strike at civilian infrastructure if the U.S. attacks again.
