England’s Henderson injures wrist during World Cup celebrations following win over Mexico
by Liam Griffin · The Washington TimesJordan Henderson had an eventful night on Sunday, as his England teammates secured a 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup’s Round of 16.
The midfielder, despite not playing any minutes, received a yellow card during the match and injured his wrist during the subsequent celebrations.
After the victory, which saw England play the final 35 minutes with 10 men, the players dipped over the advertising boards to sing “Wonderwall” with fans who traveled to Mexico City for the match. Henderson — who has played just six minutes in this World Cup — evidently failed to clear the obstacle.
Videos from the scene showed medical personnel taking Henderson off the pitch on a stretcher.
“He injured his wrist, he is at the moment in the hospital,” England manager Thomas Tuchel said. “It is a quite serious injury. It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure which is going on. I just did the [media duties] and the doc told me he’s in the hospital.”
England officials told reporters that Henderson would remain in Mexico City overnight while the rest of the squad flew back to their training camp in Kansas City.
Henderson, 36, became the first England player to appear in four World Cups during a brief appearance as a substitute during the group stage match against Panama. During Sunday’s chippy match, he received a yellow card on the sideline for arguing with an official.
“He is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control,” England’s Jude Bellingham, who scored two goals on Sunday, told The Athletic. “I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.”
