18-year-old accused of fatally shooting Coast Guard pilot in Washington state

by · The Washington Times

Investigators in Washington state said they arrested and charged an 18-year-old man in connection with the deadly shooting of a Coast Guard officer in the Seattle suburbs in August.

King County Sheriff’s Office said they took Isaiah Altre Bolar into custody Friday on second-degree murder charges at his home.

Authorities said a ballistics test confirmed last week that a gun found in Mr. Bolar’s backpack days after the fatal shooting had been used to kill Coast Guard Lt. Connor Overstreet, 29, in Bryn Mawr-Skyway, just south of Seattle.

Police said Overstreet, a Coast Guard aviator, was riding electric scooters with two other friends early on Aug. 23, when people inside a passing Toyota Prius yelled at the trio.

The scooter riders yelled something back, police said, causing the Prius driver to turn around.

Overstreet approached the car and leaned down to the passenger window, when someone inside the vehicle fired a single shot into his chest.

Police pronounced Overstreet dead at the scene.

Two days after the shooting, a Flock camera recorded the Prius driving in Kent and police soon chased the vehicle.

Prosecutors accuse Mr. Bolar of reaching speeds up to 100 mph before he drove down a dead-end road and was arrested.

Charging documents said Mr. Bolar gave the passenger a backpack and kicked him out of the Prius mid-pursuit. Police found the backpack, which contained a black revolver, in a trash can after tracking down the passenger.

Mr. Bolar had been charged with eluding police and was released with a promise to return to court.

State forensic investigators confirmed the revolver was linked to Overstreet’s deadly shooting.

SWAT Team members and King County sheriff’s deputies arrested Mr. Bolar at his home after securing a warrant.
