Commanders sign cornerback Fabian Moreau after Ahkello Witherspoon retires
by Liam Griffin · The Washington TimesThe Commanders added depth to their cornerback room on Tuesday by signing journeyman Fabian Moreau, team officials confirmed. The 32-year-old started his career with four seasons in Washington from 2017-2020.
The Commanders placed 31-year-old cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who signed with the team this offseason, on the retired list in a corresponding move.
Moreau spent the 2025 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings, where he played under the Commanders’ new defensive coordinator, Daronte Jones. Between his stints with Washington and Minnesota, Moreau spent three years bouncing from the Atlanta Falcons to the New York Giants to the Denver Broncos.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn praised Moreau’s athleticism and versatility before the UCLA product’s first practice with the team.
Washington’s cornerbacks haven’t inspired much confidence on paper this offseason. Second-year player Trey Amos is still on the physically unable to perform list after suffering a fractured fibula during last season.
Quinn previously said the Ole Miss product would be reevaluated on Thursday.
The group also includes third-year defender Mike Sainristil — who endured an up-and-down 2025 campaign — and newly signed veteran Rasul Douglas.
