by · The Washington Times

“You Can See Everything,” the documentary about imprisoned Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, opened this weekend with a $15 million haul at the box office — the biggest opening for a nonmusic documentary in two decades, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The three-hour documentary by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim averaged $17,544 per screen, the biggest opening for fewer than 1,000 locations since “Borat” in 2006. It is the biggest documentary debut since “Fahrenheit 9/11” in 2004.

A24, the independent studio that released the film, reported more than 2,000 sellout screenings, with 70% of the audience under 35. The film cost $7 million to produce and $10 million to market. It holds a 99% critics’ rating and a 98 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The documentary, which has generated Oscar buzz, took three years to make and follows Holmes’ life leading up to her prison sentence after she was found guilty of wire fraud against investors of her blood-testing company, Theranos.

“Street Fighter” won the box office weekend, with an opening of $31 million at 3,575 theaters, below the mid-$30 million that Paramount Pictures had projected.
