Trump to send 5,000 troops to Poland after head-spinning moves on European deployments

by · The Washington Times

President Trump said Thursday he is sending an additional 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland, reversing a recent decision to cancel certain deployments to Europe.

Mr. Trump announced the decision on Truth Social and tied the deployment directly to his relationship with Karol Tadeusz Nawrocki, who took over as Polish president in August 2025.

“Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Mr. Trump wrote.

The post capped a whirlwind of decisions in recent days. Mr. Trump said he would withdraw thousands of troops from Germany, as he sparred with Chancellor Friedrich Merz over his comments about the U.S. approach to negotiations with Iran.

Mr. Trump was expected to cut deployments to Poland, too, but the idea drew consternation at home and abroad.

Mr. Nawrocki is considered a natural ally of Mr. Trump. He espouses conservative and nationalist views and is reluctant to get too close to the European Union.

Piotr Müller, a member of the European Parliament, hailed the deployment as good news and urged Brussels-aligned politicians in Poland not to ruin it.

“This is how you ensure Poland’s security,” he wrote on X. “Do not waste this opportunity that has just presented itself.”
