Mick Jagger says John Lennon’s advice cost him a meeting with Elvis Presley
by Juliet La Sala · The Washington TimesMick Jagger says he regrets taking John Lennon’s advice to not meet Elvis Presley, news outlets report.
The Rolling Stones frontman shared the revelation in Monday’s episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast.
“I would never meet Elvis, Mick, if I were you,” Mr. Jagger, 82, recalled Lennon telling him, adding that the Beatle recommended never meeting his “heroes.”
In retrospect, Mr. Jagger said it “was really stupid of me” because he would have loved to meet Elvis.
Mr. Jagger said Lennon told him several times about when the Beatles visited Elvis’ home. Mr. Jagger explained he wanted to keep his own vision of Elvis rather than risk having it “shattered” the way Lennon’s idea of Elvis was.
Mr. Jagger also described his and Lennon’s rivalry as mostly “verbal competitiveness,” noting that Lennon was competitive about being funny and sarcastic but not much else.
Mr. Jagger’s interview came in support of last Friday’s release of the Stones’ 25th studio album, “Foreign Tongues.”
