Alan Osmond, eldest member of pop group The Osmonds, dead at 76

Alan Osmond, the eldest member of the pop music group The Osmonds, died Monday at age 76, multiple news outlets report.

The cause of death was not released. He died at about 8:30 p.m. Monday at his home in Orem, Utah.

Mr. Osmond was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1987 and retired from performing after the diagnosis.

Mr. Osmond started performing at age 12 with his brothers Wayne, Merrill and Jay. The group later expanded to include younger brothers Donny and Jimmy. He is known for helping create hit songs such as “One Bad Apple,” “Crazy Horses” and “Are You Up There?”

He and Merrill also co-founded “Stadium of Fire,” one of the largest annual Independence Day celebrations in the United States, held in Provo.

Mr. Osmond is survived by his wife of 50 years, Suzanne Pinegar Osmond; their eight sons; 30 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
