Ellen Burstyn to receive lifetime achievement award at the Venice film festival
by Juliet La Sala · The Washington TimesOscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn will receive a lifetime achievement accolade at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in September, news outlets report.
“Wow! I not only get to travel to one of my top most favorite cities in the whole world, I get to return home carrying a Golden Lion in my arms! The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Venice Film Festival!” Ms. Burstyn, 93, said in a statement. “I feel so honored — so happy — so filled with gratitude! Wow indeed!”
Film festival artistic director Alberto Barbera said in an official announcement that Ms. Burstyn is “an actress of rare intensity and truth” who “brought depth and complexity to unforgettable female characters.”
He noted that she was “revealed in [Peter] Bogdanovich’s ’The Last Picture Show’ and elevated to global stardom by ’The Exorcist,’ and won her Oscar for ’Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.’”
Ms. Burstyn is expected to receive the award during the screening of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s short film “Flesh Impact,” a tribute to Marilyn Monroe.
The film festival will run Sept 2-12.
