Police arrest suspect in series of Assen home explosions

Dutch police arrested a suspect Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in one or more explosions in Assen. The blasts targeted homes on Kalverstraat and Entingestraat beginning July 25. Authorities had previously confirmed a link between the incidents.

Police have released no information about the suspect’s identity or place of residence. The individual is being held under full restrictions. Earlier, police had distributed a description and images of a person of interest.

The first explosion occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at a residence on Kalverstraat in Drenthe. The following night, an explosive detonated at a home on Entingestraat, several kilometers away. The next weekend, two additional explosions struck the same properties.

In response, police increased patrols in the area and installed cameras at both locations. Two more explosions nevertheless occurred afterward.
