Dozens of Dutch travellers stranded in Indonesia following volcanic eruption

Dozens of Dutch travellers are stranded in Indonesia after Jakarta’s international airport closed Sunday morning because of a volcanic eruption. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the travel industry association ANVR following initial reporting by De Telegraaf.

"Passengers from the canceled flights are being rebooked on the first available flight,” a KLM spokesperson said.

Other airports in Indonesia have also cancelled flights. Volcanic ash in the air has made takeoffs and landings unsafe. According to Reuters, citing Indonesia’s transport minister, more than 270,000 travelers overall have been affected.

ANVR said it is unclear what will happen next and when it will be safe to fly again. The travelers were in Indonesia on organized tours.

According to the KLM spokesperson, the airline has canceled its flights to Jakrta for the past two days. KLM flies to Jakarta with a stop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
