Is rain expected in Karachi today?

KARACHI: Karachi may receive light rain today, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said, although hot and humid weather is expected to persist in the metropolis with temperatures likely to climb as high as 40°C.

The Met Office said the maximum temperature in the metropolis is expected to remain between 38°C and 40°C over the next 24 hours, while the minimum temperature recorded was 27.5°C.

It further said that humidity levels stood at 75%, adding to the intensity of the muggy conditions prevailing across the city, while winds were calm.

Meanwhile, a weather analyst said thunderstorm clouds could develop over Karachi's suburban areas after noon, with gusty winds and rain possible in several parts of the city.

The analyst said M-9, DHA, Gadap and Dumba Goth could experience rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Similar weather is possible in Scheme 33, Malir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Port Qasim and Steel Town.

Other parts of the city have a 45% to 60% chance of light to moderate rain, the analyst said.

However, the analyst said severe rainfall was not currently expected in Karachi, adding that intense heat could trigger localised cloud formation.

Earlier, the weather department said that a monsoon low that formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha coast has moved over South Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas.

The weather system is likely to move westward, bringing rain and thunderstorms to several parts of Sindh until September 16.

Furthermore, the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued an advisory a day ago, urging relevant authorities to take precautionary measures and remain vigilant during the expected weather spell.
