A powerful earthquake on Flores killed at least 54 people and left thousands waiting for relief. The disaster has deepened humanitarian needs as aftershocks, damaged roads and landslides slow aid deliveries.

A second strong quake was recorded thousands of kilometres away on Sumatra island in the west of the archipelago, but there were no initial reports of damage or casualties there.
