Nearly 50 people have become ill and one person has died, amid infections that may have been caused by slivered onions, the C.D.C. reported.

At least 49 illnesses have been reported across 10 states, including one death of an older person.

The death was reported in an older person in Colorado, and one child has been hospitalized with severe kidney complications.

The CDC said the number of illnesses is likely much higher and recent illnesses may not have been reported yet. Burgers in affected areas may be temporarily unavailable.

The CDC said an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers has led to 10 hospitalizations and one death.

Infections were reported between Sept. 27 and Oct. 11 in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Wisconsin.

The fast food chain has pulled some of the burger’s ingredients across multiple states as officials try to pin down what specific ingredient is contaminated.
